Have a great trip - we're heading up to the Lake District at the end of July. I've lived here 22 years and still haven't been there! Looking forward to some pictures. And if you're driving through Reims, you can skip that place but spend some time in the villages around Champagne. There are some amazing wines you'd never see in the States. Or here in England, for that matter! Enjoy the break.

Can’t wait for the Lake District, but you’ve prompted us to look around near Champagne. Another Substack friend told me Reims is not much to visit.

To be fair to Reims, the cathedral - where the French kings were crowned for 100s of years - is worth a look. And there are some good restaurants nearby. Or, at least, there used to be!

If I can’t find something to write about on this trip, something has gone terribly wrong!

Enjoy the trip, mate! It's a hot one over here. I left Northern France a few days ago, was already sleepless night hot. Even hotter here in Southern Spain, but at least there's air conditioning!

Looking forward to pics and write-up of your adventures.

And I think we’re going to go right through Reims when we drive from Nurburg to Paris ... ah well.

Not a lot worth seeing in Reims to be honest. Cathedral, if you like that sort of thing. Pommery Champagne house maybe worth a visit. That's about it really. Ah no, there's also the museum of the surrender, I guess that's the English name, the place where the Nazis signed their surrender to end WW2 in Europe. The allies war room was there. It's a cool little museum, check that out if you get the chance.

Have fun, Tom!

...and thanks for the definition of flâneur. I've always been one, but never knew there was a name for it. (I find that, when in Paris, a pain au chocolate is a great kick-off for a day of flâneuriating...)

I know, I’ve always been one too. That and a bricoleur!

The only thing I really bricolage is words -- never been a big "working with my hands" guy. At least, if I don't have to...! lol

Awesome, Tom! It sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm sure it will be great to unplug. We, too, are leaving shortly here for vacation and I look forward to the disconnect.
