I witnessed the aftermath of a similar incident in Port Arthur Texas 30 years ago. Trish and I took the catamaran to Lake Sabine. There was a small beach at the end of the access road for launching catamarans. A young woman, driving the brand new mustang she had just been given as a birthday present, drove down the road at excessive speed. She realized too late that the road ended in the lake. You could see the black skid marks disappear into twin furrows in the sandy beach. The top of the car was barely visible about 50 feet into the shallow water. A diver hooked up a chain and a tow truck pulled the car out. When they opened the drivers side door I was greatly disappointed that no fish flopped out.
Lake Sabine only has a maximum depth of 10-15 feet. The little Bay Area she drove into was pretty shallow. She was drenched from climbing out of the window and seemed angry and embarrassed, but seemed fine.
I know Lost Lake. I am a 2020 Census Enumerator, retired. My rudest case was in Sharingwood! Lovethe story Tom, and the idea of the story! Perfect for a place with the first name "Lost."
Gosh, this was a rip-roaring read! I absolutely love your analysis of this news story, Tom. I'm going to be switching to reading the news with a more critical eye - it's astonishing how the original story you have explored here left so many more questions than answers.
Might have to kayak this one.
I find it amazing how different the story could be if someone with actual writing talent wrote it.

Yeah - would love to understand more of the backstory here. I hope the driver was charged for the cost of the unnecessary search for his parents.

I remember visiting the launch annually when I was responsible for inspecting the county boating signs.
